4th Street
4th Street Residence is a Los Angeles modern single-family home designed for clarity, warmth, and modern California living. The house sits on a compact lot in Beverly Grove. The neighborhood is eclectic and active, yet the home takes a calmer stance. It uses natural materials, layered privacy, and a refined massing strategy to create a private retreat in the middle of the city.
Exterior + Massing
The exterior relies on a simple composition of smooth plaster and vertical wood screening. These elements filter views, control sunlight, and bring a soft, tactile quality to the street. Carved terraces introduce pockets of outdoor space. They also create depth and shadow that break down the scale of the home and add visual richness throughout the day.
Interiors + Light
Inside, the home organizes itself around natural light and functional flow. Large windows and carefully placed openings draw sunlight deep into each room. As a result, the interior feels bright, calm, and connected to the outdoors. The main living spaces remain open but still feel distinct. This balance supports everyday rituals—cooking, gathering, and resting—without overwhelming them. Warm materials such as wood, plaster, and muted tones create a grounded, inviting atmosphere.
Landscape + Connection
The landscape design reinforces a sense of privacy. Plantings soften the boundary between the street and the home. Upper-level outdoor spaces offer quiet moments above the neighborhood. These elements work together to create a calm, sheltered environment despite the density of the surrounding area.
Design Intent
4th Street Residence reflects Bittoni Architects’ view of a contemporary Los Angeles vernacular. The house elevates single-family living through proportion, restraint, and honest materials. It shows how modern architecture can stay expressive while still supporting the rhythms of daily life.
